Ethics
At PK, we see ourselves as old-style merchants with a belief in our products and a sense of responsibility toward our customers, the people who produce our products, and the environment.
How We Make Our Products
In choosing to participate in the marketplace, we resolved to manufacture products in an environmentally responsible way and to refrain from flooding the marketplace with more useless junk. In deciding how to make our products, we try to choose the available method that has the least negative impact on the environment. Although these choices often require a greater investment of time and money on our part, we believe they are the most socially, environmentally, and morally responsible ways of doing business.
- The products we have manufactured for PK are made from non-toxic materials (such as eco fleece and organic cotton) and with environmentally friendly procedures.
- The people who make our products earn living wages and work in good conditions.
- No animal testing is used.
- The non-toxic content of our organic cotton shirts is certified by internationally recognized agencies, including SKAL.
- Our organic cotton shirts are dyed with safe dyes.
- Most of our organic shirts are screenprinted with water or vegetable-based inks.
- Everything we sell communicates a kid-positive and earth-friendly message.
How We Do Business
At our PK facilities, we engage in responsible business practices:
- We use recycled paper and print on recyled paper and card stock whenever possible.
- We recycle all cardboard and paper.
- We generate a minimal amount of waste.
- We have set up our facilities to ensure a minimal amount of personnel driving time.
How We
Package Our Products
We designed our packaging with a sense of responsibility toward the environment.
- When used boxes of correct size are available to us (in local recycling bins), we reuse them.
- Otherwise, we use USPS packaging, which has just been awarded Cradle to Cradle Certification for its material content, recyclability, and manufacturing characteristics by MBDC, a product and process design firm dedicated to improving product design according to "patterns found in nature, eliminating the concept of waste entirely and creating an abundance that is healthy and sustaining." The USPS is the first to receive this certification for packaging.
- The special-size boxes and mailers we purchase are made from recycled materials.
- We try to use the least amount of packaging possible, without compromising the integrity of the products within.
- Our gift wrap is recycled brown Kraft paper with a fancy, fun ribbon.
- The padded mailers and boxes we use to protect our goods can all be reused by the people who receive them, just the way we do.
