What Is P3?

P3, which stands for third planet from the sun (Earth), is an eco magazine for kids that appeared in the early 1990s. Created and edited by Electric Company writer Randi Hacker and Jackie Kaufman and with celebrity Board Members Meryl Streep, Sigourney Weaver, and Lauren Hutton, among others, P3 was truly visionary. Whether it was teaching kids about endangered wolves and sea turtles, the importance of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, the problems with plastic, how to manage forests wisely, or consuming less, P3 was talking the talk and walking the walk long before the mass media caught up with climate change and it became fashionable to be green.

Sadly for our planet and impressively for the magazine, P3 is more relevant than ever today. When we stumbled upon it on the web one day we thought it was a current magazine and couldn’t wait to talk to the editors about partnering with them. When we learned that it was out of print, we resolved to bring it back so that kids and parents now could appreciate it as much as readers did nearly two decades ago. Creator Randi Hacker is thrilled to have P3 back in circulation here at Kids’ Rock, where we are excited to feature each month the best of the best from past issues, including articles, puzzles, games, and more. Please bear with the occaionally fuzzy reproductions. They don’t always make them like they used to, and P3 is living proof of that fact. Wow, this is a great recycling program. Happy reading!
