Pesticides in Produce: Most & Least Top 10 List

These days even the moderately well-informed among us are aware of the compelling reasons to buy organic produce: avoiding pesticides and encouraging a more sustainable food system. However, even diehard organic supporters may at times find that good, local, and/or affordable organic produce options are not available. In these situations it helps to be aware of which conventionally farmed fruits and vegetables are most and least contaminated with pesticides. As spring approaches and nature works its wonders, it’s a good idea to reacquaint yourself with the produce top ten lists (according to the Environmental Working Group). Top 10 Most Pesticide-Contaminated Conventionally Farmed Produce (overall pesticide level score out of 100)

  1. Peaches (100)
  2. Apples (96)
  3. Sweet Bell Pepperrs (86)
  4. Celery (85)
  5. Nectarines (84)
  6. Strawberries (83)
  7. Cherries (75)
  8. Lettuce (69)
  9. Grapes (imported) (68)
  10. Pears (65)

Top 10 Least Pesticide-Contaminated Conventionally Farmed Produce (overall pesticide level score out of 100)

  1. Onions (1)
  2. Avocados (1)
  3. Sweet Corn, frozen (2)
  4. Pineapples (7)
  5. Mangos (9)
  6. Sweet Peas. frozen (11)
  7. Asparagus (11)
  8. Kiwis (14)
  9. Bananas (16)
  10. Cabbage (17)

Choosing to buy less pesticide-ridden nonorganic fruits and vegetables can feel like choosing the frying pan over the fire. But certain items, such as avocados, onions, and corn, have such low pesticide exposure in conventional farming that they can be a better choice than buying imported, out of season, poor quality, or highly priced organic produce alternatives. For example, I opted for the nonorganic Hass avocados at the market this week because the organic ones were overripe and too expensive. Hass avocados, which are grown almost year round in the United States, only have a combined pesticide level score of 1 (out of 100), as compared with peaches, which have a score of 100.
